The application process

Yes, all applications for roles at Macquarie must be submitted through our online application system. This ensures our recruiters can review your application promptly and keep you updated on its progress.

1. Visit the returning applicants portal.

2. Type in your email address and select ‘don’t know your password?’.

3. An email will be sent to you with instructions to reset your password.

You can track the status of your application at any time by logging into our returning applicant’s portal on our website. For graduate and intern roles, response times may be longer during peak periods due to high application volumes. We appreciate your patience while we review each application.

If you require visa sponsorship to perform the role you are applying for or will require sponsorship at some point in the future, you are required to inform us during the application process. Please keep in mind that you will be required to provide documentation regarding your right to work status at a later stage in the process per applicable legal requirements. Please note that misrepresenting your right to work or failing to disclose that you will require sponsorship would be considered an integrity issue and could negatively impact your candidacy.

Subject to a successful application, Macquarie may offer visa sponsorship for eligible candidates in accordance with local immigration laws and regulations.

We encourage candidates to be thoughtful and focused when applying. Candidates who have a clear understanding of the role and business area they want to pursue tend to stand out in the recruitment process.

You may apply for more than one role; however, each role requires a separate application. We strongly recommend limiting your applications to one, or at most two, roles that closely align with your skills, interests, and career goals.

Before applying, take the time to research the role, the business area, and the skills required, and consider where you can genuinely see yourself developing and adding value. Applying broadly to multiple, unrelated roles without clear focus is unlikely to strengthen your application.

If you progress to an interview stage with Macquarie for more than one role, please let your recruiter know so we can ensure a coordinated and transparent process.

You can join Macquarie's Talent Community to stay connected for future opportunities. By joining, you'll be one of the first to hear about new roles and gain access to exclusive content, news, and events to help you shape a fulfilling career. You can also share your CV or resume with our recruiters, who will contact you when suitable roles arise, and set up job notifications for new roles that match your interests.

Your application is your opportunity to tell us why you want to work for Macquarie and what sets you apart. Your application and CV or resume should highlight previous work experience, volunteering, extracurricular activities, key skills and achievements.

You do not need to include a cover letter or any other documentation (e.g., transcripts or references) when you submit your application. If you are successful, we may request these later in the process, particularly for graduate or intern roles.

For graduate and intern roles, we recommend submitting your application well before the deadline. We recruit on a rolling basis and may fill the roles before application window closes.

You may update your CV or resume by logging in to our returning applicants portal. Use the login details you created when submitting your application and follow the prompts to upload your updated CV or resume. However, if your application has already been reviewed, we will not be able to re-review it with the updated CV or resume.

This means we have successfully received your application in our system.  Next, our recruiters will review your application for the role.

The recruitment process

The recruitment process varies slightly depending on the role. The typical process for experienced hires can be found here. For graduate and intern roles, the process can be found here.

Macquarie has a unique hiring process, with recruitment for some roles taking several weeks.  For graduate and intern roles, this may take longer due to the high volume of applications.

Our team will keep you updated throughout the process. You can also check the status of your application by logging into our returning applicant’s portal

Expect to be asked questions relating to the skills and competencies relevant for the role.

The interview is intended to be a two-way process, so think of some questions you would like us to answer for you. This is also your chance to find out if Macquarie is the right fit for you.

At various stages throughout the recruitment process, you may be asked to provide feedback on your experience so far. Receiving a request for feedback does not mean that you have been unsuccessful. We appreciate any feedback that we receive to continue to improve our processes.

We are committed to making our workplace and culture welcoming and supportive for everyone. Please speak with your recruiter if you have accessibility requirements or need adjustments to support you to be at your best in the recruitment process.

At Macquarie, we look for innovative, driven and talented students who share our commitment to excellence. During the interview process we’ll expect you to show us that you’re commercially minded, passionate about what we do and can tell us why you think you’d be successful at Macquarie.

To prepare, we’d encourage you to

  • visit our careers page to find out more about the business you’re applying to
  • read our article on how to effectively use AI in our recruitment process
  • visit Our People blog to hear from our employees and gain insight into the various roles and experiences at Macquarie
  • read our perspectives and market commentary to provide you with a more technical breadth of information relating to the finance industry
  • follow us on LinkedIn and use external sources to keep up to date with current market activity and trends
  • consider the skills and attributes you believe are important to excel in the area you’ve applied to and think of examples of when you have demonstrated these.

Experienced hire candidates who progress to the reference check stage will be required to submit at least two references with the following criteria:

  • your most recent direct manager or supervisor
  • someone else who has supervised you during the past five to ten years

Please note, personal references will not be accepted. We do not ask for references for our graduate or intern roles.

Psychometric Assessments

A psychometric assessment is a standard and scientific method used to measure individuals' mental capabilities and behavioural style.

There are two parts to the assessment – one measuring your cognitive ability and the other measuring your behavioural preferences.

The information generated from this assessment, in combination with all the other information gathered during the selection process, will be used to assist us in ensuring we have a comprehensive view of the match between you and the position you have applied for.

There is no pass or fail for the psychometric assessment.

You may be asked to complete the assessment from home, or to come into one of our offices to complete it. The assessment typically takes about up to two hours. If you complete the assessment at home, you may be asked to come into one of our offices to complete a verification assessment.

Make sure you are prepared. Your recruiter will send you further information about the psychometric assessment and a link to do some practice tests. The practice assessments will help you familiarise yourself with the type of assessment.

Watch a short video on our psychometric assessment.

Macquarie holds candidate psychometric assessment results for two years, so if you have completed an assessment within the last two years, you will not be required to complete this again.

If you completed our psychometric assessment, you may be asked to complete a verification assessment so we can verify your previous results.

If you are invited to sit the assessment again in error, please contact our People Experience team who can advise you on next steps. We will re-review your assessment results and either progress you to the next stage of the recruitment process, or if we think you aren’t the right fit for the role you have applied for, we will inform you that we won’t be progressing with your application. Note that if we do not progress your application, we are unable to provide you with feedback at this stage.

Where applicable, you’ll receive a feedback report on your psychometric assessment in your candidate profile, typically within two days of completing assessment. The report provides general, developmental insights into your strengths and areas for growth.

Please note, feedback reports are not available for candidates applying to roles within the United States and who are based in the United States.

If you are an experienced hire, you will have seven days to complete the assessment. For early careers opportunities, you will have 48 hours.

If you require an extension, please inform your recruiter before starting the assessment.

If you need a reasonable adjustment/accommodation to complete the assessment (e.g., you need additional time due to a medical condition or illness), please notify your recruiter prior to starting your assessment, so that we can consider and arrange the adjustments/accommodations, if appropriate. When you make your adjustment/accommodation request, it’s helpful to specify how your medical condition or illness restricts or limits your ability to complete the assessment and describe how the specific adjustment/accommodation you request will address such restrictions or limitations. Your requested adjustment/accommodation should be based on the direction or recommendation from your healthcare provider (e.g., 15%, 25%, 50% additional time to complete the assessment). When describing your restrictions or limitations, you do not need to disclose any specific underlying medical condition, illness, or diagnosis, or share any medical records or documentation at this stage. This may be requested as we review and consider your adjustment/accommodation request, if appropriate.

Adjustments to screen display settings (such as background colour) can be managed directly by you on your chosen device.

If you are unwell, we recommend waiting until you have recovered before starting the assessment. By starting the assessment, you confirm that you are able to complete it to the best of your ability.

If you are an experienced hire, please contact your recruiter. For early careers opportunities, please email our early careers team

Each of our groups has different needs so expectations for hybrid working are set on a group and team basis. Some groups may require employees to work from the office more frequently than others. At any stage in the recruitment process, your recruiter or prospective line manager will be able to discuss your team's approach to hybrid working with you, and so you may raise this at any point during your application.

Remote working means working from your usual place of residence.  Macquarie has policies that deal specifically with requests to work from an alternative location. Please discuss these policies with your recruiter should this apply to you.

While Macquarie technology allows you to work from anywhere, your work location must meet our privacy, risk, security, health, and safety requirements. However, unless your role is designated as a fully remote role, when working remotely you will be expected to work from your usual place of residence in line with applicable guidance. This allows for the blend of in-person and remote working central to our hybrid working model.
