Graduates and Interns

Recruitment process

When applying for a graduate or internship role at Macquarie you will go through the following key stages: online application, psychometric testing, video or phone interview, final in-person interviews or assessments, and lastly an offer with background checks. Our recruitment process occurs at various times and may not be finalised until later in the year.

Applicants from all academic disciplines are encouraged to apply, as our process involves greater focus on how you can demonstrate transferable skills and your motivations for applying to Macquarie. We encourage you to keep an open mind throughout the process, our team will work closely with you to find the role most suited to your individual strengths.

Being prepared will help you feel confident at every stage. Take time to practise psychometric tests, explore Macquarie’s business areas, and think about how your experiences and goals align with what we do. Throughout the process, we’re looking for curiosity, a willingness to learn, and an interest in Macquarie’s work and values – qualities that will help you stand out.

Application open and close dates are listed on our website. Whilst applications are open you can apply for the programs using our online application form. You'll be required to submit some details about yourself, as well as your resume. If you're applying for Macquarie Capital or Macquarie Asset Management you'll also be required to submit a cover letter.

You’ll receive an auto-generated email informing you that we have received your application.

Alison Thurgood from our Graduate Recruitment team gives her top tips on how to make your application stand out.

Your resume will be screened by our Graduate Recruitment Team and successful candidates will receive an invitation to complete a psychometric assessment.

The next stage of the process is typically a psychometric assessment, a standard and scientific method used to measure individuals' cognitive ability and behavioural style.

The information generated from this assessment, in combination with the other information gathered during the selection process, will be used to assist us in ensuring we have a comprehensive view of the match between you and the position you have applied for.

There is no pass or fail for the psychometric assessment.

Your recruiter will send you further information about the psychometric assessment and a link to practice assessments which will help you familiarise yourself with the nature of the assessment. Please note that the practice assessment sent by your recruiter is the only authentic practice assessment for Macquarie.

Mikaela Vikholm from our Graduate Recruitment team gives her advice on how you can prepare.

If you are proceeding to the next round in the recruitment process, you’ll receive a call from one of our recruiters. This is an opportunity for us to learn more about you and your career ambitions.

Following this, you may be invited to participate in an interview. An interview is a chance to meet the team and demonstrate your skills, experience, and industry knowledge.

Here are some tips to help you prepare:

  • Stay calm, and build rapport with a strong handshake and maintaining eye contact.
  • Try not to feel nervous or intimidated. Remember, your interviewers are genuinely interested to get to know you.
  • Think through technical or case study questions to show your reasoning and use examples that highlight multiple behaviours for behavioural questions.
  • Remember interviews are a two-way conversation – ask questions to learn about the team and the work.
  • Research Macquarie and the current market trends. End with a thoughtful question about an industry trend to leave a strong impression.

Next, you may be invited to attend further interviews with members of the team. The number of interviews will depend on the team and role you are applying for.

After your final interview your recruiter will give you an estimated timeframe of when you will be contacted regarding feedback from your interview.

If you receive an offer from Macquarie, you will be required to complete reference checks and employment screening before you commence.
