Press Release

Adelaide artist James Tylor named recipient of Macquarie Group Emerging Artist Prize

Sydney, 02 December 2013

Macquarie Group today announced that South Australian-based James Tylor has been named the recipient of the 2013 Macquarie Group Emerging Artist Prize.

Tylor was named recipient of the prize for his work (Deleted scenes) From an untouched landscape, a series of two inket prints that explore the absence of indigenous artefacts and culture from the Australian farming landscape. As recipient of the prize, Tylor will receive a $15,000 cash prize and his work will be acquired by the Macquarie Group Collection.

This is the second year that the Macquarie Group Emerging Artist Prize has been awarded. The prize aims to recognise the work of a new generation of Australian artists whose work deals with the Macquarie Group Collection’s theme of ‘the land and its psyche’. The Collection includes more than 700 works on display in 30 Macquarie Group offices around the world.

This year, 10 artists from around Australia submitted work for consideration. These artists were nominated by established artists whose works are included in the Collection: Tony Clark, Nicci Cumpston, Peter Gardiner, Jonathan Kimberley, Reg Mombassa, Ben Quilty, Kate Shaw, Charlie Sheard, Judy Watson and Catherine Woo.

The prize was judged by Suhanya Raffel, Director of Collections at the Art Gallery of New South Wales.

Ms Raffel said that she was impressed by the calibre and diversity of the young artists' work and notably, James Tylor's work made a visually succinct statement about our perception of the land and the void caused by the displacement of Indigenous Australian culture in the landscape.

Mr Tylor said: “I am absolutely delighted to have been named the recipient of the Macquarie Emerging Artist Prize. It’s an honour to have been recognised amongst a field of talented artists, and to be welcomed into the Macquarie Group Collection, one of Australia’s leading corporate art collections.”

Tylor’s work, along with the other works submitted for consideration for this year’s prize, will be on exhibition from 2 to 13 December at Macquarie’s 1 Shelley Street office in Sydney. Members of the public are invited to attend the exhibition on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday evening this week from 5.30pm to 8.00pm.
