An inclusive workplace

At Macquarie, we harness the strength of our diversity through inclusion.

Inclusion means creating a workplace environment where people feel they can be themselves, regardless of their gender, age, ethnicity or cultural affiliation, sexual orientation, beliefs or educational background.

We provide training in Conscious Decision Making to help improve awareness of unconscious bias and the effect perceptions, judgements and interactions can have in the workplace.

Macquarie continues to grow its participation in the CareerTrackers and CareerSeekers internship program (for Indigenous and refugee students), and was recognised with the Corporate Partner of the Year award in 2017, the highest recognition for an employment partner.

Macquarie’s employee networks provide staff with opportunities to exchange ideas, build relationships and further support Macquarie’s diversity and inclusion strategy. Groups exist in the areas of Gender Equality, Pride (for Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender and Intersex (LGBTI) staff and allies), Families and Carers, Heritage and Culture, Wellness, Veterans, and First Australians (focused on Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islanders).

Macquarie actively participates in women’s sponsorship, mentoring and networking programs, both internally and externally in all regions.

Programs include the Chief Executive Women’s Leaders Program in Sydney and Singapore, the Women in Banking and Finance Mentoring program and the FTSE 100 Mentoring Program30% Club Hong KongWomen’s Foundation in Hong Kong, and Association of Women in Finance Tokyo.

Macquarie recognises it can be difficult for individuals to reintegrate themselves into the workforce following an extended professional career break. Our Returner program looks to alleviate any challenges and make the transition as smooth as possible for our candidates.

Additionally, Macquarie is a Platinum Partner of Heads over Heels (a membership-based organisation that provides women entrepreneurs in Australia with access to strategic networks) and in the UK Macquarie is also a member of Women in Banking and Finance.

Macquarie Plus, our holistic wellbeing program, is designed to provide staff with individual choices and opportunities to be their best selves at work and at home, and in so doing, create and embed a culture of inclusion.

LGBTI inclusion

We promote a diverse and inclusive environment for our LGBTI staff, allies and clients, where everyone is encouraged to bring their whole self to work. We do this through inclusive policies, ongoing education, awareness and community engagement.

Our aims

  • To promote a diverse and inclusive workplace that supports lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex (LGBTI) employees and their allies
  • To provide support, resources and guidance for all employees on issues relating to sexual orientation and gender identity
  • To create a voice for LGBTI employees and their allies to improv our workplace, policies and environment

What we do

  • Provide LGBTI awareness training to staff to promote greater understanding of LGBTI issues in the workplace
  • Participate in national benchmarking indices on LGBTI workplace inclusion. Macquarie has achieved a Top 10 ranking each year since 2015 in the Australian Workplace Equality Index and has ranked in the Top 100 in the Stonewall Workplace Equality Index from 2015 to 2018.

Gender equality

We are committed to ensuring our people have access to the same rewards, resources and opportunities, regardless of gender.

Our aims

  • To increase female representation at all levels
  • To improve gender balance on Intern and Graduate programs
  • To maintain pay equity for like roles and performance
  • To maintain equality for men and women in promotion decisions

What we do

  • Embed equity and transparency in all our remuneration, promotion and development practices
  • Require female representation on all recruitment shortlists and interview panels
  • Participate in and sponsor networking and development programs that focus on women
  • Sponsor female university societies and promote finance and banking careers to female students in secondary schools

Flexibility – what shapes you, shapes us

Our workforce is becoming increasingly diverse, and technology continues to evolve to allow greater freedom to perform work from different locations and in different ways.  Macquarie aims to facilitate flexible working arrangements where possible to support our people achieve their career and personal goals. 

Because we recognise that working flexibly means different things to different people, flexible working exists across Macquarie in many forms. A flexible working arrangement may include for example, changes to hours, locations and patterns of work, or access to leave without pay, study and exam leave or a range of other flexible options dependent on circumstance and feasibility. 

Ultimately, Macquarie empowers its staff to manage their professional commitments to suit their own personal situation, and equips its people managers to lead a flexible workforce. 

Other initiatives to support flexible working include childcare centres, backup child/adult/eldercare, nursing mothers’ facilities in all regions, return-to-work coaching for parents and employee network groups for families and carers in many locations. The vast majority of Macquarie staff are able to access some form of company paid parental leave provisions.

Partnership and awards

Globally, Macquarie works closely with external employer forums, not-for-profit organisations and diversity suppliers to support our focus on diversity and inclusion. We engage actively with these organisations to benchmark our policies and practices, leverage their expertise and drive positive change at Macquarie.
