Macquarie expands oil and gas equity research capabilities with new hires in London

  • David Hewitt joins as Head of European Oil and Gas Research
  • James Carmichael joins as a Senior Analyst covering the E&P sector
  • Appointments are part of Macquarie’s ongoing investment in cash equities

Macquarie Group (“Macquarie”) has announced the appointment of David Hewitt and James Carmichael to its oil and gas equity research team within Macquarie’s Commodities and Global Markets (“CGM”) Group.

David Hewitt joins as Head of European Oil and Gas Research and will cover the global super-majors. Mr. Hewitt has extensive industry and research experience for 18 years working for Texaco, Caltex and Chevron, the last 6 years of which in the LNG sector. He joined the equities industry 12 years ago and was formally the Regional Head of Oil and Gas at CLSA and then the Global Head of Oil and Gas Equities Research at Credit Suisse. He is well known as an industry expert in LNG and regularly speaks at industry events on the topic.

James Carmichael will cover the exploration and production (E&P) sector and brings over 10 years’ experience in oil and gas and financial analysis. Mr. Carmichael joins from independent corporate broker, Peel Hunt, where he ranked #2 in the 2018 Extel survey, in the UK-Listed E&P space. Prior to that, he spent nearly four years at global research and consulting firm Wood Mackenzie covering upstream oil and gas.

David and James will join Giacomo Romeo in London, who will continue to cover mid-cap integrated oil companies and European refiners. Andrew Archer also joins as Oil and Gas Specialist Sales lead in London, a role he has held for 13 years at Barclays and Lehman Brothers.

Macquarie’s Equity Research has over 150 analysts providing differentiated insights on almost 2,000 listed companies and thematic sectors across 18 markets globally. The new appointments are part of Macquarie’s ongoing investment in its cash equities business, expanding its research offering.

In the US and Europe Macquarie analysts focus on core specialist sectors closely aligned with client demand and Macquarie’s global expertise across: infrastructure and utilities, metals and mining, oil and gas, financials, retail and consumer, and disruptive technology.
