Recruitment Fraud

Macquarie has been made aware of reports that fraudulent employment offers are being made to prospective candidates in Macquarie’s name.

Recruitment fraud is a sophisticated fraud involving the offer of fictitious job opportunities to prospective candidates by people claiming to work for, or be affiliated with, Macquarie. These communications do not originate from Macquarie and are perpetrated by individuals unaffiliated with Macquarie or any of its associated entities. Recruitment fraud is typically perpetrated through online services such as false websites and fraudulent job offers may be made via instant messenger, emails and text messages in Macquarie’s name. The aim of the fraud is to obtain personal information and/or money through requests for application, processing and/or software fees.  Macquarie’s name and logo often feature on the documentation and in the communications without authority.

Warning signs of recruitment fraud

There are a number of warning signs which may indicate that a solicitation and/or job offer is recruitment fraud:

  • request for money (e.g. for “visa fees,” taxes, application fees, processing or software fees);
  • request for personal information such as passport and bank account details, often at an early stage of the recruitment process;
  • use of emails from free web-based email accounts such as Yahoo, Gmail, or Hotmail;
  • use of mobile (cell) phone numbers, rather than office numbers;
  • spelling and grammatical errors;
  • sense of urgency in the communications;
  • offer of employment extended when no face-to-face interview has occurred;
  • use of poorly formatted documentation.
