Opportunity

AirTrunk is a leading hyperscale data centre platform for large cloud, content and enterprise customers across the Asia-Pacific region.

Since the 2017 launch of its first centre in Western Sydney, AirTrunk has rapidly grown into a leading regional designer, builder and operator of independent data centres, with facilities in Australia, Singapore and Hong Kong, and one underway in Japan.

Once fully operational, AirTrunk’s data centres are expected to deliver a combined 750 megawatts (MW) of secure, reliable and efficient data capacity to meet the needs of cloud and content providers in the region.

Approach

In April 2020, a MAM-managed fund invested in AirTrunk. Since that time, MAM’s teams in Sydney, Hong Kong, Singapore and Tokyo have worked with AirTrunk’s management team to accelerate its expansion across Asia-Pacific.

Outcome

Scalable and sustainable cloud infrastructure in key APAC markets

Since the acquisition, material amounts of growth capital have been deployed across AirTrunk’s Asia-Pacific data centre platform that is helping to meet the accelerating demand for digital infrastructure caused by rapid population growth, rising digital adoption and the ongoing shift to the cloud. Two further data centres opened in Singapore and Hong Kong in December 2020. They will soon be followed by the opening of a second Sydney data centre, in the city’s north, and AirTrunk’s largest data centre to date, in Tokyo. This site will span 13 hectares and forms an important part of AirTrunk’s strategy to deliver secure, reliable, scalable and cost-effective infrastructure to hyperscale customers.

Leading hyperscale data centre platform for large cloud, content and enterprise customers

Focused on supporting major global cloud providers across Asia-Pacific

Capacity of ~750MW across six data centres in tier-one markets

Ability to support growing demand in data consumption, cloud applications and digital infrastructure

The world’s communications needs have never been greater - we expect to be connected all the time, on multiple devices with low levels of latency. The advent of 5G, shift to remote working and move to the cloud mean this unprecedented data growth shows no signs of slowing, which is driving the need for digital infrastructure. In Asia-Pacific, these thematics are amplified by the region’s emerging economies and growing populations.”
