Over FY2025, we celebrated the 25th anniversary of Macquarie Sports. The Macquarie Sports Committee is proud of the impact Macquarie Sports has had in levelling the playing field since it was established in 1999. 
Since inception, our program highlights over 25 years include enabling access to sporting clinics for more than 200,000 children across Australia; supporting 70 young people into employment through grantmaking; and awarding 83 scholarships to elite, student-athletes through the Macquarie Sports Scholarship program, providing them with the opportunity to participate in a paid internship. Many have gone on to build careers at Macquarie.3”

Celebrating 25 years of Macquarie Sports

To celebrate the 25th anniversary of Macquarie Sports, we launched the Athletes in Schools program with the aim of inspiring primary school students around Australia.  

Macquarie Sports took some of the country's best sportspeople to primary schools in every state and territory, where over 3,500 children had the opportunity to meet an athlete, ask a question and hold an Olympic or Paralympic medal.

Education and employment-focused grants

In the second year of grantmaking for Macquarie Sports, our two grant partners delivered excellent outcomes for the young people they support. 

Clontarf Foundation aims to improve the education, discipline, self-esteem, life skills and employment prospects of young Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander men. 

Our grant funds the placement of 40 boys at Tweed River High School Clontarf Academy, which opened in 2023.

In FY2025, Clontarf reported that1:

  • Students at Tweed River Academy achieved an attendance rate of 86%
  • 100% of the year 12 graduates from 2023 were employed by the end of 2024.

Surfing Australia formed in 1963 to establish, guide and promote the development of surfing in Australia. Our grant supports Coach-Ready, an employment pathways program held on the Gold Coast for young people from around Australia.

In FY2025, Surfing Australia reported that1: 

  • 20 participants completed the program and were accredited to begin employment.
  • 100% of participants were paired with surf coach employers in their local regions, providing networks and ongoing mentorship support throughout the process.
  • 90% of graduates from the previous year were still employed six-months post-graduation

Sports clinics

Macquarie Sports works with peak sporting bodies to provide free sporting clinics to children in communities around Australia. In 2024, together with our partners, Macquarie Sports held 22 community sporting events across nine sports, engaging more than 2,300 children, many of whom are located in rural and under-served communities across Australia.2 

The clinics give children access to train with some of Australia’s best sporting role models and provide participants with brand new sporting equipment. In 2024, sports included wheelchair sports, surfing, Australian rules football (AFL), hockey, netball, surf sports, cricket, rugby union, and water polo.

Spotlight on Macquarie Sports and NSW RugbyTackle Life gala day 

In June 2024, Macquarie Sports supported a rugby union gala day for 200 students in Granville, run by NSW Rugby in support of Tackle Life, a program focused on western and south-western school communities, which trains high school students how to develop and teach rugby union skills in primary schools, promoting life skills, leadership and career pathways. 

Macquarie Sports Scholarships enable the transition from the sporting arena to the workplace for elite athletes with an interest in finance and banking. Macquarie Sports Scholarships align with Macquarie’s summer internship program, providing elite athletes who want to pursue a career in the financial sector through a 10-week summer internship and the opportunity to give back to their community. In 2024, we welcomed a Macquarie Sports Scholarship recipient into the Commodities and Global Markets team.
