Establishing a new Americas headquarters on Fifth Avenue

23 November 2023

Thirty years after Macquarie opened its first office in New York, our new Americas headquarters at 660 Fifth Avenue is set to open in 2024. As the building’s anchor tenant, Macquarie will occupy over 220,000 sq ft of space, spread across seven interconnected floors, with top of building signage and 30,000 sq ft of private outdoor space, right in the heart of Manhattan.

This next-generation workspace reflects a focus on innovation and ongoing investment into the Americas, supporting Macquarie’s ability to deliver for clients and communities across the region. The workplace design embraces a commitment to growth, sustainability and the health and wellbeing of our people, while promoting global connectivity with Macquarie colleagues and partners around the world.

After surveying more than 100 potential sites around Manhattan, 660 Fifth Avenue was chosen for three key reasons: its authentic commitment to sustainability; its large, open floor plates which support flexibility and connectivity; and its central location providing ease of access for Macquarie employees and clients, as well as opportunities to engage in the surrounding Midtown district.

Located between 52nd and 53rd Streets, 660 Fifth Avenue was initially constructed in 1957 by New York design studio Carson & Lundin. The building’s current owner, Brookfield Properties, is nearing completion of a $US400 million redevelopment project to future-proof the 64-year-old property, saving significant emissions on the alternative of demolition and reconstruction.

The new façade of the 39-story office building is reclad in 11x19 ft glass panels – some of the largest windows ever used on an office redevelopment in New York City. This custom glass facade provides unobstructed, floor-to-ceiling windows, maximising daylight and views of the surrounding city.

Macquarie’s new office at 660 Fifth Avenue will feature a central atrium of cascading, staff-focused spaces, connecting all seven of the floors it will occupy together in a continuous, activated “Avenue” that is designed to curate and support informal interactions among people.

Building upon Macquarie’s legacy of colorful, connective staircases within its workplaces, the staircase at 660 Fifth Avenue will feature a warm brass color that draws inspiration from New York City’s heritage of brass architectural details and reflects the beauty of the city’s famous urban sunrises and sunsets, when the sun stays low on the horizon and creates a warm glow over the city skyline.

Within a hybrid world, our workplaces have an even greater role in supporting diverse ways of working and in driving moments that matter for our people, clients and communities.”
