Marco Auletta: Building Macquarie’s infrastructure presence in Italy
14 July 2026
Before analysing investments and shaping infrastructure strategy, Marco Auletta spent his time on the slopes as a ski instructor. That early experience reflects the balance, focus and perspective he now brings to his work in infrastructure investing.
Building an interest in finance
Marco’s path into finance was shaped during his studies in Economics and Management at Bocconi University in Milan. It was there that he gained his first exposure to investment banking, private equity and the broader financial system, developing an understanding of how capital is allocated and how businesses access funding to grow.
During this time, Marco developed a strong interest in private markets. He was particularly drawn to the role of active ownership and operational improvement in driving value, alongside the longer-term perspective that comes with investing outside public markets. That early interest became a defining thread in his career.
After completing his studies, including a Master’s in Finance and Risk at the London School of Economics, Marco began his career with an internship in M&A, before choosing to move to London, where he spent three years in investment banking, specialising in digital infrastructure. This experience gave him a strong technical foundation and exposure to complex transactions, while reinforcing his interest in infrastructure investing.
Finding Macquarie
Marco first encountered Macquarie during his time in banking, where he worked on transactions involving the firm and began following its growth. “I followed Macquarie’s growth closely,” he says.
When the opportunity arose to join Macquarie’s Milan office, it was a natural next step.
A role with Macquarie felt like a strong match both professionally and personally,” Marco says.
The chance to be part of a global platform, while contributing to a growing local presence in Italy, was a key factor in his decision.
Now, Marco works across asset management, deal origination and execution. A significant part of his time has been dedicated to Open Fiber, Italy’s largest wholesale fibre-to-the-home operator and one of Macquarie’s portfolio companies, where he acts as asset manager.
Being close to an asset over the full holding period offers you a completely different perspective on how value is created, particularly when it is helping improve connectivity across Italy,” he shares.
Marco has been involved in a number of important initiatives, including securing new equity commitments and supporting the development of its business plan. These activities play an important role in the long-term direction and growth of the strategically important national asset.
Alongside asset management, Marco is involved in identifying new investment opportunities in the Italian market and executing transactions. The variety within his role means balancing long-term stewardship of assets with the pace and intensity of live deals.
Empowered to take ownership
For Marco, one of the most rewarding aspects of working at Macquarie is the team environment. He describes his colleagues as collaborative and commercially minded, with a willingness to share perspectives and challenge each other constructively.
You are trusted to take ownership, but you are never on your own,” Marco says.
This balance between autonomy and support, with early responsibility and exposure to live workstreams has helped to accelerate his personal development.
Maintaining balance
Outside of work, Marco enjoys staying active. From the gym to sports, including football and padel. These activities help Marco stay balanced; “Staying active is my main outlet and how I manage my day-to-day,” he says.
Travel is another important part of his life, Marco returns to London regularly to stay connected with friends and former colleagues and particularly enjoys exploring more remote destinations as a way to switch off and reset.
Looking ahead
Marco is focused on helping to grow Macquarie’s infrastructure presence in Italy, building on Macquarie’s expertise of investing in Italy for more than 20 years. He sees a strong opportunity to contribute to building the platform, deepening relationships and supporting new investments.
I want to play a meaningful part in building the business here, while continuing to develop as a well-rounded investor,” he says.
Over time, he aims to broaden his experience further, lead transactions and contribute to shaping investment strategy, while maintaining the balance needed to sustain long-term growth in his career.
