Meet our people | Australia and New Zealand
Legal Counsel, Corporate and Asset Finance Group
My career at Macquarie has evolved significantly since I first walked through the door seven years ago. While still at university, I accepted a role as a client manager in our Technology Finance team. I was responsible for managing information technology leasing facilities for a portfolio of corporate and government clients. By day I was processing transactions and at night I was completing my law degree.
Within a few years I transferred into a risk management and credit team, working on high-value structured finance and leasing facilities for clients in Australia, New Zealand, the US and Asia. I enjoyed being seconded to the US with our Macquarie Equipment Finance business. During my six months abroad I worked with some amazing people on a range of exciting transactions. I also enjoyed some great weekends exploring the US.
The most rewarding aspect of my role is the transactional work, such as large leasing deals or acquisitions for the business group. While these projects are often challenging, there is a real sense of fulfillment when a deal closes.
With respect to balancing work and personal commitments, I would say its all about give and take. There are certain times when deadlines need to be met. But I have had the flexibility in my roles to accommodate further education, volunteer work and other personal commitments.
Portfolio Manager, Macquarie Asset Management
I started at Macquarie in 2002 through the graduate program. Since then, I have taken on a wide range of new challenges and roles. I commenced as an analyst, before progressing to Portfolio Manager and Associate Director.
I currently manage an Australian equity portfolio for our clients, who include both institutional and retail investors. I am also Head of Research for our investment team. As a Portfolio Manager, discipline, patience and self-belief are critical. You need an analytical mind and the ability to understand how a business operates. Communication skills are also important.
One of the most rewarding aspects of my role is assisting not-for-profit organisations achieve their investment goals. Our client base consists of more than 100 not-for-profit organisations.
The most challenging aspect of my role is managing the dynamic and sometimes volatile nature of equities markets. I concentrate on the consistent implementation of our investment process, which focuses on delivering long-term returns to our investors.
Chief Product Owner, Banking and Financial Services Group
Macquarie is a well-known brand within the financial services industry, respected for their ongoing innovation. I was drawn to the idea of a company that provided staff with an opportunity to drive innovation within their area of the bank. Since joining, I've come to appreciate the can-do attitude of the people more than anything.
During the six years I've been with Macquarie I've had the opportunity to move through multiple divisions and roles, each time needing to learn new skills in a short amount of time. It's a continuous challenge of understanding new ideas and working with new stakeholders but that's what keeps it so exciting. Looking back I couldn't have anticipated my career journey and I don't think I would have had these opportunities anywhere but Macquarie.
I completed my degree in Information Technology at UTS. My degree not only gave me the technical knowledge I needed for my first role as a developer, but it also taught me a certain way of thinking about problems and how to solve them. This, more than anything, has helped me throughout the variety of roles I've held at Macquarie.
Global Mobility Manager, Corporate Operations Group
I joined Macquarie as a Human Resource Administrator in Manila with the employment contract team. I am now the Global Mobility Manager, working with Macquarie businesses and human resources teams, as well as external vendors, to assist with employee mobility globally. There are opportunities for Macquarie staff to work around the world, so the mobility function is important in order to support employees as they move from location to location.
My role has provided me with the opportunity to travel, meet and work with great people and I am constantly learning – no two days are the same.
I consider Macquarie’s culture to be very open. For example, I have been given the autonomy to work and perform to the best of my ability and management has provided me with the support to maximise my potential. Teamwork is valued and has played an important role in driving change and the success of projects I have worked on. I have witnessed mutual respect across the organisation and I am fortunate to work with dedicated, talented people – my colleagues are also a lot of fun.
My greatest achievement so far has been working on assignments overseas. It gave me the opportunity to be independent, to be immersed in another culture and to work with different people from whom I learnt a great deal. It also gave me a greater understanding of Macquarie as a whole and how the business works.
Head of Group Tax Accounting and Decision Support, Financial Management Group
At Macquarie, I have had very different roles in Sydney and London. The diverse nature of our business means you’re always seeing something new. One day you’re working on a toll road in Australia and the next you’re looking at the aircraft leasing business in Ireland.
In my current role, I cover tax accounting, compliance and decision support for our Australian and New Zealand businesses, as well as for Macquarie Group as a whole. I manage a large team and the people I work with are high achievers. They are driven to succeed, which means you’re always pushed to deliver the best outcome you can. The management support and training I’ve received has been really beneficial.
The one piece of advice I would give people joining Macquarie is to spend time getting to know our different businesses and how they relate to each other. Early in your career it is easy to be focused on the business in which you work. As you move through the organisation, seeing the bigger picture becomes very important.
Associate Director, Financial Management Group
I joined Macquarie as a graduate. As I have developed I have had the opportunity to take on more and more responsibility and I now manage a team of people around the world. I also worked in London for a number of years before returning home to Sydney.
I am currently Team Leader and Head of Finance for Macquarie Atlas Roads responsible for the Finance function of an ASX listed infrastructure fund, Macquarie Atlas Roads.
A rewarding aspect of my role is the opportunity to work on a broad spectrum of work with talented and driven people. My work is characterised by variety, new business activities, new challenges and new events.
Manager, Macquarie Asset Management
I joined Macquarie as part of the graduate program as a quantitative analyst with the Listed Equities team. I performed a lot of data analysis and collection, then progressed to completing quantitative research projects. Currently I am a dealer in the team. My primary responsibility is to manage the execution for the Listed Equities Asian funds and the Global Quant index funds. This involves trying to keep up with the fast moving markets and talking to brokers across Asia.
I believe, at Macquarie, the culture of promoting innovation, team work and collaboration is unparalleled. You are surrounded by talented, supportive people and your ideas and input are held in high esteem regardless of your seniority.
Some of my best experiences with Macquarie have been as a member of the Graduate Volunteer Network. I was able to volunteer for the Youth Off the Streets Food Van as well as participate in several fundraising activities. On a personal level, winning a silver medal in the World Women’s Ice Hockey Championships Division 3 marks one of my greatest achievements. It represents the culmination of years of perseverance and training. To get the opportunity to represent Australia is an amazing honour.
HR Business Partner, Corporate Operations Group
I am the HR Business Partner dedicated to supporting Macquarie Asset Management across our offices in Asia Pacific. The purpose of this role is to partner with the business senior leaders to deliver strategic Human Resources (HR) solutions that assist them in attracting, developing and retaining their people.
In my role you are required to have strong communication skills, the ability to build trusted relationships with senior stakeholders, good judgment and most of all, resilience.
In my experience the roles at Macquarie are only about 80% defined; the other 20% is what you make of it. This freedom to constantly challenge the status quo is unique. Our people are smart and motivated and their positive energy rubs off.
I have been supported by management to take on a variety of different roles – from central HR to business HR, from Australia to Hong Kong and from the sell side to the buy side. It is this diversity of experience at Macquarie that I value the most.
Division Director, Risk Management Group
I head up Internal Audit for our Banking and Financial Services Group, Macquarie Asset Management, Corporate Asset and Finance Group and Macquarie Capital, leading a team of auditors that review the operations of these businesses globally. The skills and attributes required for this role are communication and collaboration. As with a lot of roles in Macquarie, it is all about how you get your ideas across to people and working with other areas to achieve agreed goals.
While I have always been in Internal Audit, I have had the opportunity to move around and review different businesses, learning a lot along the way. I have also seen Macquarie grow significantly overseas and have had the opportunity to expand my knowledge of international business.
My advice to students joining Macquarie would be that while having a long term plan for your career provides you guidance, always be open to opportunities and new career paths, even if they differ from your original goal. You will be surprised by where you may end up.
Associate Director, Corporate Operations Group
I am the HR Business Partner for the Wealth Management division within our Banking and Financial Services (BFS) business. I work with senior leaders in the business to provide advisory HR support on all people related matters in accordance with Macquarie’s corporate HR principles and practices. I also partner with specialists within the Central HR team to ensure the Macquarie and BFS HR strategic priorities are delivered at a divisional level.
The rewarding part of my work is the quality of the people I work with, the variety in my role and working for an organisation that is constantly challenging the way we do things and aspires to be best practice across all areas of HR.
My career at Macquarie has evolved in many ways as I have been given the opportunity to explore new roles.
This has meant six different roles across two countries. I didn’t think my career would be so varied, but without these opportunities I probably wouldn’t be where I am now.
