Approach
Macquarie acquired a 50 per cent stake in Formosa 1 to develop Taiwan's first offshore wind farm and help kick-start the island's supply of offshore wind-generated power. The investment in Formosa 1 was followed by a further portfolio of approximately 2 GW5 of offshore wind in Taiwan, developed by Macquarie's portfolio company, Corio Generation.
Outcome
Formosa 1 was a first-of-its-kind project in Taiwan.
It was the first operational offshore wind farm in Taiwan6 and one of three landmark demonstration incentive projects approved by the Taiwan Government to promote offshore wind development in the region. Formosa 1 started its operations in December 2019.
Industry recognition: PFI Renewables Deal of the Year 2018, IJ Global’s Offshore Wind Deal of the Year in Asia-Pacific 2018 and The Asset Triple A Renewable Energy Deal of the Year, 2019.
