Opportunity

Greece is one of the world’s leading ship-owning markets, characterised by entrepreneurial owners and a long history of identifying and capitalising on market opportunities.

In this environment, ship owners value financing partners who can deliver flexible structures, support a wide range of asset profiles, and provide certainty of execution.

Greece has played a central role in the growth of Macquarie's Shipping Finance business. The team's inaugural transaction was completed with Greek tanker owner Atlas Maritime in 2017, establishing a long-term presence in one of the world's most important ship-owning markets.

Approach

Since 2017, Macquarie has completed more than 25 transactions with Atlas Maritime, while also supporting a  range of established shipping companies and new market entrants across the Greek market.

A recent example includes a $US99 million senior debt facility provided to ship-owning entities of the Athens-based Technomar Group to refinance seven containerships. Macquarie also supported Adele Shipmanagement, a venture established by a Greek entrepreneur from outside the shipping industry, with financing for the acquisition of its first bulk carriers. The relationship has since grown alongside the business, with Macquarie now financing four bulk carriers for the group.

Outcome

By providing flexible and timely financing solutions, the team has helped clients optimise capital structures, pursue acquisitions, support fleet growth and establish new shipping ventures.

The breadth of transactions completed across the market demonstrates Macquarie's ability to support both established owners and new entrants across different vessel types, ownership structures and strategic objectives.

Macquarie's continued activity in Greece reflects a long-term commitment to the market and its ability to support clients through a wide range of financing needs.
