Opportunity

The continued advancement of technology over recent decades has changed how societies live, work and connect, making consumer electronics an indispensable part of our lives.

Over the last decade, smartphone ownership alone has more than doubled to nearly five billion users worldwide,1 and similar growth curves are accelerating across computing, networking, industrial technology and enterprise hardware.2 Such expansion comes amid increasing focus on both the affordability and environmental impact of technology.

The global secondary market is expected to exceed $US244 billion by 2034,3 and Ireland-based Alchemy is uniquely positioned to support the next era of global technology, one where circularity, embedded AI and sustainability converge.

Alchemy’s capabilities enable the accurate, high-quality and scalable remarketing of consumer and enterprise technology, allowing manufacturers and partners to unlock the full lifetime value of the products they create and to meet the growing global demand for responsible, future-ready technology ecosystems.

Approach

As a founding investment partner in 2017, the backing of Macquarie’s Commodities and Global Markets business has enabled Alchemy to scale rapidly and establish itself as a global leader in circular solutions.

Alchemy’s primary focus is on delivering circular solutions for a wide range of categories – from mobile devices and consumer electronics to computing and enterprise hardware. Through its proprietary technology, global infrastructure and deep expertise, it supports manufacturers and their retail and distribution partners drive new product affordability and accelerate technology upgrades. Its services include device trade-in, returns management and reverse logistics, as well as device processing, sales and distribution management and to date, the company has successfully recovered, refreshed and resold more than 12 million devices.4

By focusing on building long-term partnerships, Alchemy has nurtured and developed a robust and active secondary market. This connects used devices with an extensive and engaged buyer base and ensures products have more than one life, helping to drive a more sustainable future.

Alchemy has paid back more than $US2.5 billion in value to consumers and enterprise customers, through trade-in, to support their next product purchase. Alongside the environmental impact, this has materially improved the affordability of new products being rolled out by giving customers credit for their trade-ins.

Outcome

Over the past 8 years, Alchemy has grown from a startup to a global market leader with annual revenues of more than $US1 billion, and has been recognised for its impact.

Through focused growth, Alchemy has developed a global operational footprint, with more than 3,000 customers in 60 countries supported by 16 processing facilities in 13 countries across 5 continents.5

The business’ unique ‘vertically integrated’ approach enables it to deliver commercial success and ESG outcomes for customers. Based on Alchemy’s lifecycle assessment, they are able to generate carbon credits when customers purchase secondary technology through their program. Through the purchase of secondary market products instead of new ones, Alchemy has helped customers avoid 845 million kilograms of carbon emissions to date.6

Alchemy’s growth has been recognised three years in a row, as a Deloitte Technology Fast 500 EMEA winner7 and as the number one ranked Irish business on the FT1000 List of Europe’s Fastest-Growing Companies.8 In 2025, it won the ‘Impact’ award at the Deloitte Technology Fast 50 Ireland.9 This followed it being awarded the ‘Growing New Technology’ award in the 2024 Deloitte Technology Fast 50 Ireland awards.10
