Tips to ace your video interview

Congratulations on making it to the next round of the Macquarie recruitment process.

For some roles at Macquarie, the next step will be a video interview rather that a face-to-face one. If you've received an invitation to a video interview, don't be daunted! We've put together some tips to help you ace it.

The process involves a set of pre-recorded questions that candidates film themselves answering, using the camera on their mobile phone or laptop.

The video interview generally takes no longer than 30 minutes and you can complete it when and where you would like, as long as it's before the due date. One of the benefits of video interviews is that it removes the scheduling issues and time-zone challenges that sometimes delay face-to-face interviews.

You'll also have the opportunity to express your passion for the role you are seeking, in a way that may not come through in a written résumé.

Tips for your video interview

1. Relax and be yourself

   We know interviews make some people nervous, and video interviews are no exception. Try to relax and be yourself. Be honest with your responses and let your personality shine through.

2. Do your research

   The video interview is designed to be relaxed and professional. We suggest you prepare for it in the same way that you would prepare for a face-to-face interview: make sure you've done your research on Macquarie and the role for which you're applying. If you have notes that you want to refer to during the interview, feel free to look at them. However, remember that eye contact is important.

3. Give concise answers

   Although you'll have two minutes to answer each question, you don't need to use up the whole time. Keep your answers consistent. When responding to a competency or behavioural question, we suggest using the STAR (Situation, Task, Action, Result) technique. For example, describe a situation you've faced, the task or goal you worked towards, the actions you took, and the result you achieved.

4. Look professional

   We want you to be comfortable but, remember, this is a job interview. Check what's in the background of your video and make sure we can see your face.

5. Test your equipment

   You'll be given the opportunity to do this while you are setting up your video interview. We strongly recommend you do this to ensure that your microphone is on and your camera is well positioned.

6. Practice!

   You'll be given a few practice questions that won't be recorded as part of your interview. Give them a go so that you become familiar with the technology.
