A New York native with a passion for people, Joanne Preece has spent her entire career at Macquarie, building community from the ground up. From her first days as an intern in Risk Management, Joanne found more than just a job—she found a network, a sense of belonging, and a platform to connect with colleagues across the globe.
Joanne’s journey began at St. John’s University, where she studied actuarial science. Drawn to Macquarie by its international culture and welcoming interviewers, she quickly realized this was a place where people matter.
From the moment I interviewed, I was hooked. The culture and the people—everyone was so open, friendly, and respectful.”
Over ten years, Joanne has seen Macquarie evolve and grow, but one thing has remained constant: the sense of community. “It’s the people that keep me here. You build genuine friendships and relationships with your coworkers, and that makes coming to work every day fulfilling.”
As an Associate Director in the market risk team, Joanne partners closely with trading teams, helping them innovate and manage risk. “It’s a true partnership. The business owns the risk, but they rely on us for expertise and advice. You feel part of their success, and of our clients’ success,” Joanne explains.
Risk management at Macquarie takes a bold, unified approach powered by AI and collaboration. This means Joanne and her colleagues aren’t just managing risk - they’re preparing for the future, safeguarding trust and driving innovation across the businesses they support.
Joanne also credits this same entrepreneurial spirit for enabling her career growth. “Macquarie managers value and trust you; they give you every opportunity to flourish. Empowerment is part of the culture here. I started as an intern in New York, was given the chance to attend a training in Sydney with the global RMG grads and was given the chances to help in our London and Houston offices when others moved on. That trust and support are rare and it’s what makes Macquarie different.”
Beyond her day job, Joanne is passionate about giving back. She’s a driving force behind Macquarie’s community outreach, captaining the firm’s Cycle for Survival team and organizing in-house charity events that have raised more than $US200,000 for causes such as rare cancer research and mental health.
Her leadership and dedication were recognized with a Macquarie Award, and she was invited to lunch with the Macquarie Board in recognition of her impact.
The Macquarie Group Foundation empowers us to make a real difference. With their match, our fundraising goes even further. It’s incredible to see how much we can achieve together,”
This year, as the Macquarie Group Foundation celebrates 40 years, Joanne reflects on the power of community: “Whether it’s colleagues supporting your career or coming together for a cause, the sense of belonging and purpose at Macquarie is unmatched.”
Joanne’s advice for those starting out? “Say yes to new opportunities, build your network, and get involved. At Macquarie, you’re never just a number. You’re part of a community that wants you to succeed.”
