Patricia’s career journey is one of adaptability and growth. With a background in Industrial Engineering and Service Management, she initially envisioned a career in operations, but her curiosity for Technology led her down a different path. Today, as a Technology Business Operational Risk Manager at Macquarie, Patricia shares how the Tech Select graduate program opened doors to a tech career, the impact she makes in her role, and why inclusion and continuous learning are central to her experience.
I graduated with a degree in Industrial Engineering and a minor in Service Management from De La Salle University Manila, a program that typically leads to careers in supply chain or operations. My interest in technology grew during college, but I didn’t have the technical background to pursue it. When I learned about Macquarie’s Tech Select graduate program, I was inspired by how it welcomed people like me into tech roles. This opportunity allowed me to transition into a technology career while working in a global financial organisation. It truly reflects Macquarie’s purpose of ‘empowering people to innovate and invest for a better future’ – including their future!
In my previous role as a Technical Business Analyst, I spent most of my day engaging with stakeholders, understanding their needs, and translating them into solutions that moved projects forward.
I worked on a major project that required strong critical thinking and the ability to balance multiple factors to deliver outcomes. The role helped me develop a strong sense of responsibility and ownership, which I found both challenging and rewarding. While our work may not always be as visible as other professions, its impact is significant.
As I move into my new role as a Technology Business Operational Risk Manager, I’m looking forward to deepening my understanding of technology risk and business processes, and to supporting stakeholders to manage their day‑to‑day risks across the business.
Starting without a technical background, I relied on Macquarie’s support to build my technical foundation. The graduate program enabled me to earn certifications such as Amazon Web Services Cloud Practitioner and provided resources that enhanced my knowledge.
A few months in, I was inspired by colleagues and encouraged by my senior colleagues to step into a Technical Business Analyst role, and now as a Technology Business Operational Risk Manager. The transition felt seamless thanks to patient mentors and a culture that values learning. Today, I continue to grow by engaging with stakeholders and expanding my understanding of processes across the organisation.
One of the most unique aspects of Macquarie is its commitment to building an inclusive culture through Employee Network Groups. These groups allow us to connect beyond our day-to-day work and contribute to meaningful causes. I’m proud to lead initiatives in the Women in Tech Employee Network Group, where I’ve organised events like the annual Escape Room during Foundation Week - a team activity where employees work together to solve puzzles and complete challenges within a set time. The event builds connection while supporting the community, with all donations going to our partner charity, Voice of the Free, a Philippines-based non-governmental organisation that provides shelter, medical care, legal assistance, and education to women and children after experiencing human trafficking.

Experiences like these strengthen our sense of community and make me feel part of something bigger.
When I joined Macquarie, I never imagined building a career in tech. Today, I’m passionate about growing my skills and delivering changes that make a real impact. The work I do has strengthened my analytical thinking and attention to detail, while opening up opportunities for leadership and deeper technical expertise. I’m particularly excited about exploring how AI can be used to drive efficiency and innovation in the solutions we deliver.
My biggest advice is to never let your academic background limit your aspirations. I came from industrial engineering and successfully transitioned into tech because I was willing to learn and take risks. Employers value adaptability and a growth mindset more than perfect credentials. Start by exploring resources and building a basic understanding of your target field - but don’t wait until you feel 100 per cent ready. Opportunities favour those who are curious and courageous.
