Former Division I basketball captain Lizzy Groetsch brings the habits she built on the court into her work as an Analyst in Macquarie Capital’s Industrials team.
“I’m originally from Pittsburgh and completed my undergraduate degree at the University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School with majors in Finance and Operations, Information and Decisions (OIDD),” Lizzy says. “OIDD combines operations management and data analytics, including classes on the application of AI to business challenges.”
Alongside her studies, Lizzy played four seasons of Division I basketball for the Penn Quakers. She started every game in the 2023–24 season, earned recognition as a College Sports Communicators Academic All District honoree, and was named team captain for the 2024–25 season.
Her interest in finance developed during a corporate finance internship at U.S. Steel. “They had recently acquired Big River Steel, and seeing how a large, legacy company used M&A to evolve was fascinating,” Lizzy says.
Conversations with Penn alumni helped shape her direction. “I wanted a role where I could build financial skills quickly and gain broad exposure early in my career,” she adds.
Lizzy first noticed Macquarie through Penn Athletics. “Macquarie sponsored Penn Athletics, and the Palestra was branded as Macquarie Court during my time as a student-athlete,” she says. “When I started thinking about where I wanted to start my career, I wanted to learn more about Macquarie,” she says.
After attending a Macquarie recruitment event, the connection felt clear. “I was inspired by the innovative and creative solutions Macquarie delivered for its clients. The entrepreneurial culture that people described strongly resonated with me,” Lizzy says.
As an analyst in Macquarie Capital’s Industrials team, Lizzy advises companies across industrial and environmental services, chemicals and materials. Her responsibilities include valuation analysis, drafting marketing materials, financial modeling, and facilitating buyer diligence.
When she is not working on active projects, she develops tailored presentations on sector trends, competitive landscapes, key market developments, and client-specific insights.
I am constantly exposed to new things, which keeps the work exciting,” Lizzy says.
Cross-team collaboration is also central to her role. “We often work with the infrastructure advisory team,” she explains. “It is great to learn their perspective and combine it with our industrials thinking.”
Training and mentorship have also guided in her development. “During the internship program, we were treated like full-time analysts, which made the transition easier,” Lizzy says. After returning as a graduate, she completed structured technical training and continues to build skills through weekly learning sessions.
In her role today, she values leadership support. “My manager takes time to explain his thinking and the broader context behind our work,” Lizzy says. “He includes me in high-impact meetings so I can see how ideas become outcomes.”
Peer collaboration also plays a key role in her success and growth. “The analysts and associates have played a big part in my development,” she says. “They teach best practices and new ways of doing things. You gradually learn how to take work off the people above you. That is the goal.”
Lizzy’s basketball experience continues to influence how she approaches her work.
Success comes from showing up ready and staying connected. Each person’s contribution helps the whole team move forward.”
Team connection extends beyond deal work. “The training program and time together help build a tight-knit analyst class,” Lizzy says. She also recently joined the Analyst and Associate Advisory Board, contributing to initiatives that strengthen culture and collaboration among junior team members.
“One event that stood out and prompted me to apply for the board was a young professionals networking session on our terrace overlooking Fifth Avenue,” she adds. “It was a great way to build relationships across the industry and network with peers at other firms.”
“I am excited to keep executing on the deals I am working on and to take on more responsibility,” Lizzy says. She plans to deepen her financial modeling skills and broaden her sector knowledge to continue growing within Macquarie Capital.
Her advice to future candidates is practical. “Talk to people in the industry,” Lizzy says. “Ask about their experiences, the projects they work on and what they find fulfilling or challenging. Those conversations helped me understand what I wanted.”
She also highlights the role of new tools. “AI can flatten the learning curve,” Lizzy says. “It helps break down complex ideas, support research and increase efficiency. You still need to double-check everything, but it is a great resource.”
