Shedding kilos and counting kilometres

The 2015 Kilos & Kilometres for Kids annual fundraising event raised a record-breaking $270,000 thanks to more than 100 Macquarie Australian staff, and their clients, family and friends.

Teams competed to either lose the highest percentage of body weight or accumulate the largest number of kilometres by walking, running, cycling or swimming over the month.

Staff across Macquarie Securities Group and Macquarie Capital raised funds for the Children’s Cancer Institute of Australia, Autism Awareness Australia, Make a Difference and So They Can.

This is the fourth year Kilos and Kilometres for Kids has taken place, raising $740,000 in total including matching by the Macquarie Group Foundation.

Day in the dirt at Central Park

On a steamy summer Friday morning day in June, 18 Macquarie New York staff rolled up their sleeves for a ‘Day in the Dirt’, as part of the Central Park Conservancy’s environmental maintenance program.

The Conservancy is a non-profit organization that provides 75% of Central Park’s annual budget, is responsible for all aspects of Park maintenance and depends on volunteers to accomplish its mission.

The volunteers worked for three hours in the hot sun before retiring to the shade for a picnic lunch. A summer intern who joined the volunteer effort commented, “it’s experiences like these with your co-workers that you remember most”.

Summer interns get the ball rolling for charity

Researchers of childhood cancer and other life-threatening diseases received a funding boost from interns working at Macquarie’s New York office this summer.

After being challenged to come up with philanthropic activities, 10 interns across three Macquarie business groups brainstormed a series of creative charity event ideas. They kicked things off on a Friday afternoon in July, attracting a lot of attention by rolling an exercise ball through the office floors and ‘selling’ the chance to sign the ball for a donation. 

With the amount raised matched by the Macquarie Group Foundation, the simple idea contributed close to $6,500 for the St Jude Children's Research Hospital.

Appetites roll up for biggest morning tea

Ninety staff volunteered to bake treats for morning tea across Macquarie’s three Sydney buildings, feeding hundreds of employees for a gold coin or small note donation, – leading to almost $11,500 raised for  the Cancer Council of NSW during this year’s Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea in Sydney.

The annual event is a popular one on Macquarie’s community calendar, with all donations supported by the Macquarie Group Foundation. 

Looking the part at a dinner dance

An invitation to a dinner dance comes with the expectation that evening attire will be worn. But for the people assisted by Micah Projects, a Brisbane-based organisation providing a range of services for the vulnerable and chronically homeless, access to quality wear is limited.

Micah’s annual Moonlight Magic Dinner Dance is held at the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre in August and ahead of the event three Macquarie Brisbane staff coordinated a clothing drive amongst their colleagues to help attendees look and feel the part. The team collected men and women’s formal, cocktail and ‘after 5’ clothing, including several suits, dresses, dress shirts and pants.

People’s choice recognises grief in artwork at NGV exhibition

Ballarat Grammar School student Mollie Binns won Macquarie’s People’s Choice Award in the National Gallery of Victoria’s StArt Up: Top arts 2015 exhibition.

Macquarie also awarded $1000 to the winner of the Macquarie Group Collection Prize. The award is judged on the Macquarie Group Collection’s theme of ‘the land and its psyche’. Sophia Kons from Brighton Secondary College, won for her untitled chalk pen on bark work, representing the re-writing of history and human connections to nature.

Macquarie was the principal supporter of the exhibition, which showcased young Australian artists. Over 40 works were shortlisted and will be displayed at the NGV Studio this year.

Navigating Tokyo's Yamanote

Macquarie staff raised over ¥100,000 - with the help of the Macquarie Group Foundation - through taking part in a “Yamathon” for the first time in Toyko.

A Yamathon is a physical and navigational fundraising challenge where teams compete to visit all 29 stations of Japanese Rail’s Yamanote train line on foot in less than 12 hours. 

The Yamanote rail line circles Tokyo and is Japan’s busiest. Part of the Yamathon challenge is that there is no set course and only basic directions are provided as a guide. The only rule is that all Yamanote stations must be visited by each team but part of the experience is to be creative and take shortcuts.

Depending on the team and their navigational prowess, the challenge can be completed over 38 kilometres or up to 44 kilometres. The fastest team this year completed the challenge in just over five hours.

The event raises funds for local non-profit Nadia, an international group of volunteers helping in the recovery efforts after the major earthquake the country suffered in early 2011.
