2017 Annual Review

Participation in sport plays an important role in the development of children and communities. The social, health and lifestyle benefits associated with sport shouldn’t be limited to those who can afford to participate. Macquarie Sports removes this barrier to participation in sport by providing free clinics to a wide range of communities around the country.

Utilising high profile sports people as ambassadors for the program, the aim is to inspire and motivate those participating. Macquarie Sports has directly reached over 200,000 children since 1999.

Welcome to the Macquarie Sports 2017 Annual Review

For many children in remote, regional and marginalised communities, opportunities to be mentored by high profile sports people are often limited. Macquarie Sports aims to make these encounters possible. The purpose of these interactions is to inspire and motivate the children, while also leaving them with important life messages around team work, discipline, healthy eating and fitness.

Sport plays a unique role in developing strong communities. It has an innate ability to create a level playing field by breaking down societal barriers, promoting harmony, diversity and inclusion. Macquarie Sports recognises that all children should have access to sport. Our work represents Macquarie’s view that companies have a role to play in developing healthy communities.

Since 2004, Macquarie Sports has offered corporate scholarships to elite young athletes who have corporate career aspirations alongside their sporting goals. The scholarships provide paid work placements across the various Macquarie business groups, access to a variety of networks and resources within Macquarie and ongoing casual employment opportunities within the Macquarie Sports program.

Over 50 young sportspeople transitioned through the scholarship program with several going on to find full time positions within Macquarie Group.

In 2017, Macquarie Sports held 27 community events around Australia, across eight sports, reaching 5,318 children. Clinics were run in New South Wales, Queensland, Western Australia, Victoria, South Australia and the Northern Territory.

Macquarie Sports' key objectives are to:

Benefit children across communities through the delivery of high quality sporting clinics.

Partner with grassroots sporting organisations to enhance their capacity.

Convey Macquarie’s commitment to the local communities in which it operates.
