Dushyant Bhatia: Embracing change and evolving from a career in finance to technology

07 April 2025

Dushyant Bhatia joined Macquarie’s Gurugram office 13 years ago. Throughout his time with the business, he has embraced many opportunities to grow his career in different directions. His dedication to both work and the community was recognised in 2023 when he received two Macquarie Awards.

Dushyant Bhatia joined Macquarie’s Gurugram office in 2011 and is currently a Vice President in the Technology team within Macquarie’s Corporate Operations Group (COG). Reflecting on his journey, Dushyant highlights how much has changed over the past decade, particularly the remarkable growth of Macquarie’s operations in India.

“When I joined in 2011, it was still early days for Macquarie in Gurugram,” Dushyant recalls. “I was drawn to the growth potential I could see for the business here.” Over the years, the Gurugram office has evolved into one of two major shared services centres supporting the Group’s global operations.

Since joining, Dushyant has witnessed the transformation of the India operations into a robust team of 1,900 employees. He takes pride in contributing to projects that have facilitated this growth while also experiencing personal and professional development along the way.

The quality of work I’ve been involved in, combined with the exposure to Macquarie’s different businesses and divisions, has been incredibly rewarding.”

One of the aspects Dushyant values most about Macquarie is its inclusive culture, which encourages diverse ideas and perspectives. “With a culture of speaking up, your voice is heard and valued. We are all part of one global team, and that truly impresses me,” he says.

Embracing change

Dushyant qualified as a Chartered Accountant in 2005, beginning his career in audit at professional services firms. He then moved into financial services and gained exposure to risk and governance. In 2011, a consultant approached him with an opportunity to join Macquarie as a Manager within the Finance Operations Risk Management team.

“Macquarie relies on risk management as a key pillar of its operations, so the role capitalised on my background while offering me a bigger canvas to explore on the risk front,” Dushyant explains.

Two years later, Dushyant moved to the Projects team where he played a key role in setting up new teams in Gurugram, including the Group Treasury, Systems, and Data teams.

Through his work in various projects, Dushyant built strong relationships across Macquarie. These connections eventually led to his transition into the Technology team in 2019, where he became a Program Manager for Macquarie Capital’s Cash Equities business. In this role, he implemented a new settlement system and collaborated with regulators such as the Australian Prudential Regulation Authority (APRA).

“It was a broader role that gave me the chance to manage large-scale change and transformation projects across geographies, with an organisation-wide impact,” he explains. “I was grateful to be supported and encouraged by leaders who had confidence in my capabilities.”

Moving from finance to technology was an exciting challenge for Dushyant, as he gained key tech skills while navigating a steep learning curve - especially when working remotely during COVID. To bridge the gap, he upskilled through online courses, earning professional certifications alongside on-the-job training, which helped him get up to speed.

Leading strategic transformation

In 2023, Dushyant became a Delivery Lead on a large regulatory program designed to strengthen Macquarie Bank’s governance, culture and structure.

“It’s been a big strategic priority for Macquarie,” Dushyant explains. “We completed the initial deliverables on time, and the program has been showcased for its successful implementation.”

As a Delivery Lead, Dushyant oversees costs and reporting, establishes and oversees delivery plans, works with global business stakeholders to solve problems, and ensure communication lines are open.

“From senior stakeholders to the delivery team, developers, business analysts, and others, I need to engage everyone on the project journey,” he says. “I work across the project lifecycle and, more recently, have been leading solution design and implementation.”

Having an impact beyond the work

In 2023, Dushyant received two ‘Macquarie Awards’, which recognise and reward our people for role modelling the organisation’s purpose of ‘empowering people to innovate and invest for a better future’ and the principles of Opportunity, Accountability and Integrity. He earned one award for leading the delivery of the regulatory program and the other for his volunteer efforts as an employee champion for Humana People to People India (HPPI), a Macquarie Group Foundation grant partner.

HPPI supports girls and other marginalised individuals in India through education, social development and poverty alleviation interventions.

“My journey with the not for profit began when I volunteered to be a point of contact, as it drew on my skills in dealing with different stakeholders.”

From organising fundraising events, including a stand-up comedy show and a tree plantation drive, to arranging a tour of Macquarie’s offices for some of HPPI’s young girls, Dushyant has found fulfilment in the impact of his involvement.

“It gave people the idea that they could aspire to something different in life and be empowered to build a better future,” he explains.

Unlocking opportunities

By embracing opportunities to grow his career over the 13 years with Macquarie, Dushyant says he’s been able to constantly learn, develop and apply his knowledge.

Macquarie has hard-working people, its own unique style of collaborative culture, and a growth mindset. If you’re driven and accountable, there are big opportunities”
