Reality transcends vision for record-beating Kiwi fundraiser

Macquarie’s New Zealand staff beat their own financial targets when they embarked on a nation-wide fundraiser for World Vision, and won the charity’s corporate challenge in so doing.

Around sixty staff from across the Auckland, Christchurch and Wellington offices signed up for World Vision’s 40-Hour Famine Corporate Challenge with a fundraising goal of $10,000.

They were able to raise more than $23,000 by the end of the challenge by implementing their own fundraising ideas. While not all staff participated in the challenge, they found ways of supporting their colleagues who embarked on a wide range of team activities, including a 40-kilometre walk, undertaking 40 good deeds, brewing 140 bottles of beer, cycling almost twice the width of Malawi on a stationary bike (550 kilometres), and competing in a pub quiz.

Staff were also supported by family members, including children who carried donation buckets along the walk route.

One of the fundraising coordinators, Kathryn Bruce from Macquarie Private Wealth, said she was delighted with the contribution Kiwi staff made. “Ultimately, we wanted to support poor communities in Malawi, where children are living without access to clean water and nutritious food,” she said.

“Winning World Vision’s 2014 Corporate Challenge was great, but not as great as knowing the positive difference the funds raised will make.”
