Opportunity
Situated 240 kilometres south of mainland Australia, Tasmania relies on the Bass Strait as its primary gateway for trade, with more than 99 per cent of the island state’s freight volume transported by sea.1
Strait Link is Australia’s leading Bass Strait shipping and logistics provider, delivering 45 per cent of the sea-freight services that link Tasmania to Australia’s national economy and global supply chains.2
Tasmania’s export economy continues to grow, with goods and services exports approaching $A6 billion in 2024–25 and a long-term ambition to reach $A15 billion by 2050.3
Igneo Infrastructure Partners, a leading global infrastructure fund manager, and Macquarie Capital identified Strait Link as a stable, long term infrastructure investment opportunity. The asset is resilient and critical to Tasmania’s supply chain and formed part of Allegro’s carve out of Team Global Express.
Approach
Macquarie Capital acted as sole financial adviser and debt arranger to Igneo on its acquisition of Strait Link in December 2025.
Drawing on deep expertise across supply chains, logistics and infrastructure as an adviser and investor, Macquarie Capital brought a unique holistic perspective to the transaction. Strait Link was positioned appropriately with lenders, demonstrating how Strait Link fits into the wider trade and transport networks and is strategically important to Tasmania’s economic resilience.
Outcome
Macquarie Capital supported Igneo in executing the transaction opportunity by aligning specialist expertise and collaboration across its Infrastructure, Industrials and Debt Capital Markets teams to deliver an integrated strategic, commercial financing solution.
This coordinated approach enabled Igneo to secure a high-quality asset with long-term national importance.
Igneo’s investment is significant as it highlights the evolving way logistics and supply chain assets are seen as core-plus infrastructure assets due to their critical role in sovereign economic resilience and continuity. Igneo’s investment also secures a long-term owner for an essential freight service between Tasmania and mainland Australia.
