Chair's message

In 2015, as the Macquarie Group Foundation celebrates its 30th anniversary, we remain committed to the long-held values of Macquarie’s philanthropic approach.

We continue to believe that companies have an important role to play in the development of a healthy community and a civil society. We do this by encouraging and supporting our staff to address community issues they are concerned about, by giving their time and expertise, as well as financial support matched by the Macquarie Group Foundation.

Including numerous strategic grants, this financial support means we have been able to provide more than $A240 million to thousands of community organisations since our inception. 

We also continue to foster social innovation, working with both new and existing not-for-profit partners to identify ways to address community disadvantage.

30 years of community support

2015 marks the Macquarie Group Foundation’s 30th anniversary. Milestones such as this prompt us to reflect on what has been achieved since our inception and how we can best celebrate this.

The Foundation and Macquarie staff have provided more than $A240 million to hundreds of community organisations around the world since 1985 but we recognise that support has always been contributed in many other ways as well.

Our philanthropic contribution has grown alongside Macquarie Group, supporting the increasing involvement of Macquarie staff in the community, the ongoing development of international programs and our focus on the sustainability of the not-for-profit sector.

In 2015, we are recognising innovation as the enduring hallmark of our Foundation through a special 30th anniversary Macquarie Social Innovation Award, with the publication of a book exploring best practice social innovation and the opening of a physical office space for social entrepreneurs in Sydney.

The Americas

In the US, we believe engaging with youth from disadvantaged backgrounds helps create opportunities for them.

We have a long-standing mentoring program in New York and Chicago, providing college and career guidance for low income, high-potential students. We also read to elementary age public school students in New York, and offer work experience placements to high school students in Houston and internships to first-generation college students in New York.

We know that offering our professional services to non-profit organisations can also mean their resources are better directed to end clients.

What really stands out about the Macquarie Group Foundation is its innovative and engaged approach to understanding our key challenges. It also shows dedication through mobilizing Macquarie staff to help address our challenges in meaningful ways.

That’s why small teams of Macquarie finance professionals have worked with community organisations on financial strategy projects as part of our Taproot Foundation relationship in New York.

Our learning and development experts have also worked with our grant partner the Global Foodbanking Network, helping develop an e-learning system for food banks around the world.

And our staff have delivered training workshops to multiple non-profit organisations in project management, effective communication and management coaching. 

Whether raising money to help WWII veterans in Houston visit the Washington DC war memorial for the first time, or contributing to sports and camp programs for young people with autism in Canada, our staff support a range of community organisations close to their heart across the region.


Combining financial and pro bono support can make a significant improvement to a lean non-profit’s bottom line.

In Hong Kong, we have worked closely with Mother’s Choice to fund new infrastructure to upgrade the charity’s technology platform, as well as provide pro bono IT advice on the project.

In Singapore, we came together with local migrant rights organisation Humanitarian Organization for Migrant Economics (HOME) to solve critical funding challenges, while in Hong Kong our human resources team provided expert advice in the sourcing, short-listing and selection of a senior role candidate at the Justice Centre.

Education is a strong pathway for people to break out of the poverty cycle. Staff in our Gurgaon and Hong Kong offices both work with organisations helping young adults from impoverished backgrounds (Asha Development Society and Po Leung Kuk respectively) to familiarise them with the corporate world.

The Foundation and Macquarie staff also support non-profits making a meaningful difference in developing countries. In Hong Kong, Manila and Singapore, we supported Opportunity International with its micro-finance initiatives, complementing our funding of a social performance management project to measure how Opportunity’s work is benefiting the poorest of the poor.

Europe, Middle East & Africa

As in other regions, sharing our professional skills is a priority. In London we work to build the capacity and sustainability of local community organisations through our Big Alliance partnership; more than 30 charities have been helped in this way over the last 6 years.

Our work with ReachOut in the UK last year not only saved the youth mentoring organisation £12,000 in IT costs but also won the charity a further $A10,000. This followed the significant pro bono work provided by a six-strong team of London staff who helped develop and secure ReachOut’s technology platform and resulted in them winning the Pro Bono category of our Staff Community Awards. 

This year, a team from Macquarie’s IT division helped us with a major project, providing consultation and pro bono advice as we transitioned onto a new platform, saving us a significant amount of money.

London staff also have a long history of valuing mentoring. It’s our tenth year of partnering with the Mentoring Works programme; more than 250 staff have been matched with nearly 500 students over that time, raising aspirations and building confidence.

In Frankfurt, staff raised money for orphans in southern India, while in Johannesburg, employees rolled up their sleeves to raise money and improve the learning environment for local low-income students.

From Glasgow to Cape Town, staff across the EMEA region are supporting the charities they are passionate about.

Australia & New Zealand

In Australia, we fund and volunteer for targeted programs reaching children and young people in difficult circumstances.

Achieving educational goals is a cornerstone to achieving in other areas of life, which is why hundreds of our staff around the country work with a variety of non-profits to help disadvantaged students with their reading, writing and academic development. This complements the psychological support provided by our long-standing grant partner to young people.

By volunteering their professional skills as well, our staff make an additional impact at the sectoral level. Our Macquarie Director Program, in partnership with the School for Social Entrepreneurs, provides practical learning sessions for entrepreneurs with a social or environmental benefit start-up idea.

With the incredible support of Macquarie, we’ve been able to more deeply evaluate the ReachOut service, refining what works and mapping new functionality to young people’s needs. We know that pro bono contributions - such as a team of Sydney staff who last year worked with Suicide Prevention Australia to develop its inaugural annual report - are of enormous value to deepening support to community organisations.

On the funding side, this can also mean initiating a giving circle with friends – as one of our Adelaide staff did for employment service charity SYC over the last year – or committing to 40 fundraising events in a 12-month period as a Sydney employee did for diabetes research (winning her the Fundraiser of the Year in our Staff Community Awards).

And it’s this diversity of giving at Macquarie that’s the hallmark of our philanthropic approach.
