Opportunity at Macquarie supports microfinance work

Sydney, 12 Mar 2015

As part of International Women’s Day celebration events at Macquarie offices around the world, staff have donated to microfinance community organisation Opportunity International for its work empowering women in developing countries.

Macquarie’s Sydney, London, Manila, Singapore, New York and Philadelphia offices have organised events that presented Opportunity’s approach to breaking the cycle of poverty through small loans and business training in impoverished communities.

In Sydney alone, close to $A4,000 was raised for the organisation at a morning tea by staff, together with Macquarie Group Foundation matching.

In Hong Kong, staff were invited to a performance of the play Seven, written by award-winning female playwrights who explored the challenges and triumphs of women leaders in Russia, Pakistan, Nigeria, Northern Ireland, Afghanistan, Guatemala, and Cambodia. Attendees donated and pledged approximately $HK5,500 to Opportunity on the night.

In London, a lunch raised ₤3,000 and prompted two staff members to join a business women's Opportunity network to help raise awareness and support for OI in the UK.

Lunch and learn events have been and will also be held in Manila, Singapore, New York and Philadelphia.

Over 2012-2014, the Macquarie Group Foundation partnered with Opportunity International Australia to fund its social performance management project. This enabled Opportunity’s microfinance partners in India to gauge the effectiveness of their work in delivering services, reaching target clients and the impact on clients’ lives.
