Macquarie Vancouver CAN do

Vancouver, 01 April 2014

Since 2010, when a Macquarie employee introduced the autism support charity to her colleagues, Macquarie’s Vancouver office has partnered with the Canuck Autism Network (CAN).

CAN provides high quality sports, recreational, social and employment-related programs for individuals and families living with autism, while building awareness of the disease across British Columbia. For the last four years, Macquarie’s Vancouver team has had the opportunity to spend time with many families affected by autism and hear the impact CAN programs offer to both children affected with autism and their siblings and parents.

Macquarie Securities’ Carly Dean, who has led recent fundraising for CAN, said the costs associated with managing and treating autism can be overwhelming. “The opportunity to work with CAN, which provides essentially free services and therapy, has been extremely rewarding. Macquarie employees have generously donated their time to sit on committees, volunteer at events and come out to Canucks Autism Network programs because of that,” she said.

Together with Macquarie Group Foundation support, Vancouver employees have donated over $450,000 to the Canucks Autism Network since 2010, helping over 1000 families in BC living with autism each year. Recent fundraisers have involved what has become an annual event known as ‘the Macquarie dinner’, where the venue and food are donated. At the 2014 dinner at one of Vancouver's most sought after restaurants, Hawksworth, the highlight was a candid and off the record discussion of Canucks NHL hockey - moves, team management and future planning – shared amongst Canucks owners, executives and alumni, and Macquarie staff and business leaders. This dinner raised $21,500 for CAN alone.

Macquarie also supported CAN’s 2014 Family Festival, with three Vancouver employees on the organizing committee. The April event raised more than $85,000, with the day including a fundraising walk, live entertainment and appearances by surprise celebrity guests.
