Giving a lift up in Manila

Manila, 07 Nov 2015

Motivated by a desire to provide children and young adults with a quality education, a week-long series of fundraising activities were recently organised between Macquarie staff in Manila and Sydney to support the Uplift Cares Global Movement Foundation.

Uplift is based in Manila and helps disadvantaged people through health, education, livelihood and personal development programs.

Juls De Guzman, one of the Macquarie event organisers in Manila, says that Uplift was chosen as the charity to support because the organisation’s objectives were close to her team’s heart.

“Uplift gets children off the streets and sends them to school. They help people get a job by giving them training and education. They help feed poor kids and families and give them medication. We chose this organisation because, like us, they believe in the life-changing power of education and good health,” De Guzman explained.

Claire Mahony, co-event organiser based in Sydney, wanted to help support the initiative after a work trip to Manila. She brought the idea back to her colleagues and they took on the challenge to fundraise at the same time as their Manila colleagues, with daily themed activities including the sale of sweet treats and baked goods, raffles and casual clothes days.

In total, PHP312,700 ($A9,300) was raised together with Macquarie Group Foundation matching, which is being used to ‘adopt’ an Uplift supported learning centre and school in Pinagbuhatan Pasig (metro Manila), and sponsor six students for a year.

A group of staff in Manila recently visited the Uplift supported learning centre to meet volunteers and students there and to see how their donations were being used.

“We saw the enthusiasm of the students and how excited they were to have us visit. We presented a training pack on building dreams and career aspirations to help them plan their careers based on their own interests, goals and skills,” said De Guzman.
