How to stand out in the recruitment process

Every year, Macquarie receives thousands of applications for our Insight, Intern and Graduate Programmes, and we read every single one.

Making your application stand out can be challenging, so Sally Gannon and Emma Cahill from Macquarie’s Graduate Recruitment team have put together some tips on how you can ensure you make the best first impression, at all stages of the process.

While there’s no magic formula, there are a few things you can do to ensure your application gets noticed for the right reasons. 


Keep your CV simple

‘Whilst content is key, your CV should be limited to 1 page. It should be a snapshot of you, giving the reader a brief summary of your educational background and key achievements and interests. A well formatted document that is clearly laid out and easy to read is important; a good CV will entice the reader to want to know more about you!”  


Add the extras

“As an applicant, you’re more than the degree you study or the university you go to, so make your profile stand out by including the things you really care about. Have you worked part time while you studied? Do you speak a language or can you code?  Maybe you have an interesting or unusual hobby, or you have an active role in an extra-curricular activity. Whatever it is, add it! These help us to get a better understanding of who you are, what makes you tick and some of the key skills you’re developing.” 


Don’t leave it to the last minute

“Regardless of what stage of the process you’re at, don’t leave anything to the last minute. Whether you’re at application stage or about to complete a video interview, start researching early and allow time in your schedule to ensure you’re always prepared to take part in the next step. We recruit for our opportunities on a rolling basis and it’s very competitive; sometimes we fill our roles before the deadline!” 


Practise makes perfect

“After you’ve submitted your application, our recruitment process includes a psychometric assessment, a video interview and a Superday. Taking part in each step is exciting but can make you feel nervous. The best way to feel confident and prepared is by practising. If you’re invited to complete our assessment, we’ll send you a link to some practise tests to help you get familiar with it. Previous applicants have told us it really helps.

Your video interview and Superday are opportunities for you to tell us why you have applied to Macquarie and we’ll want to see that you are well researched on us and the role, motivated and commercially aware. Think about some of the questions we could ask, and practise your answers with a friend (or in the mirror). Hearing yourself say the answers, assessing the tone and speed of your voice and getting comfortable with the content will give you confidence when you’re doing the real thing.”
