Finishing college, I was not your typical hard-core finance type. I enjoyed an eclectic curriculum – from social theory to macroeconomics to postmodern literature – and played rugby and the violin outside of the classroom.

I was interested in working with smart, motivated people in solving business problems, but had some concerns about the perils of the investment advisory or consulting track: producing repetitive analysis and selling tools with little scope for true ownership, creativity or growth beyond a two-year supporting role.

I joined Macquarie Capital Advisers  in February 2005 and was immediately pulled onto a bid for a bulk liquid storage business based in New Orleans with major operations in New York Harbor. Working with a director and an associate, we studied how petroleum, ethanol and other economically vital products flow into and around the US. We learned the business from the ground up and developed an informed basis on which to value – and ultimately buy – the company.

At Macquarie, I’ve had an unparalleled learning experience because I’ve been given a constantly expanding role beginning with the basics of finance and developing the full spectrum of tools needed to manage and execute a deal. On top of this, Macquarie is itself an organization that has succeeded globally by listening to people’s ideas, innovating constantly and doing things differently from the bulge bracket firms.
