Fixed Income, Currencies and Commodities (FICC)

Fixed Income, Currencies and Commodities provides a variety of services across the globe with an underlying specialisation in interest rate, commodity or foreign exchange related institutional trading, marketing, lending, clearing or platform provision.

The predominant FICC client base is financial institutions and significant commodity producers and consumers. With structuring, sales and trading professionals in the Australia, New Zealand, the Americas, Canada, Asia and the Middle East, FICC offers quality service and risk management solutions to meet our clients’ needs.

FICC offers trading, sales, research and finance covering:

  • Fixed income – interest rate, debt and credit securities
  • Currency – foreign exchange spot, forward and tailored services
  • Commodities – metals, energy, environmental products, agriculture, freight, bulk commodities, and complementary futures services

FICC operates in most major trading markets and emerging markets around the world.

Our business activities are split into the following divisions:

  • Metals and Energy Capital operates on a 24 hour basis in the global base metals, precious metals and energy sectors providing derivative trading, price making and structured hedging activities as well as equity and debt financing for metals and energy projects
  • Credit Trading facilitates client transactions with institutional investors and takes proprietary positions through market making in, trading of and investing in corporate debt securities, credit default swaps, syndicated bank loans, collateralised debt obligations, asset-backed/mortgage-based securities and derivatives of these products.
  • Agricultural Commodities  provides risk management, structured financing and limited commodity related investor products and selected physical commodity solutions to a broad customer base. Agricultural Commodities expertise includes agricultural commodities (grains, soy complex, sugar, coffee, cocoa and ethanol) and selected dry and wet freight routes.
  • Energy Markets is a sales and trading leader in natural gas, oil, oil products, emissions, electricity and coal. The division provides tailored energy price risk management and structured investor solutions to clients globally across the spectrum of energy production, conversion and consumption products
  • Foreign Exchange provides 24-hour interbank price-making services on Australian Dollar spot, forwards and options as well as quoting on other major currency pairs from one central dealing room in Sydney
  • Futures provides a full range of broking and clearing services on Australian and international futures exchanges. The division is a leading provider of these services in the Australian market and a growing provider of services to international markets
  • Debt Markets arranges and places primary market debt for clients, and provides secondary market liquidity in government, inflation-linked, corporate, global, mortgage and asset-backed securities. It also provides risk management solutions to our clients through structured securities and derivative-based products relating to credit and interest rate risk
  • Emerging markets provides a full suite of services to institutional and local market participants in emerging markets globally. Sales & trading teams provide execution, custody, derivatives, financing and structured products over emerging markets bonds, credit, distressed debt and FX as well as high yield and high grade products. The Private Capital Markets & Advisory team provide specialised services in financing solutions, debt acquisitions and selective capital partnering in addition to establishing and managing investment vehicles and distressed asset opportunities in emerging markets
  • Central serves as an incubator for various non-Division specific or early stage or cross-divisional initiatives as well as housing various Group-wide services.

What might I be doing as a Graduate within FICC?

Graduates joining FICC may be offered a diverse range of roles including Junior Traders, Risk Analysts, Junior Sales Analysts, and Structuring Analysts. All roles provide real experience and training in a dynamic trading floor environment.

Our graduate induction program provides ongoing training and graduates are given access to professional development programs both in Australia and offshore.

You’ll work alongside senior staff and be provided with strong mentoring, guidance and development. The exciting and dynamic nature of the global markets will see you working in a fast paced, energetic environment with strong exposure to local and international opportunities.

What might I be doing as an Intern within FICC?

The Fixed Income, Currencies and Commodities Summer Internship Program offers a unique opportunity to gain ‘hands on’ experience on a live trading floor. Through our program, you are offered the opportunity to gain exposure across a number of our businesses including Energy Markets, Foreign Exchange, Metals and Energy Capital, and Agricultural Commodities, as well as the functions that support the trading floor including Market Risk and Legal. You will work alongside traders, sales analysts, structurers, legal and risk specialists, helping you to helping you to understand the roles and responsibilities that exist across the trading floor environment.
