Macquarie Bank Foundation expands international reach

13 September 2004

Community programs in Brazil and New Zealand have received funding from the Macquarie Bank Foundation, in support of volunteer efforts by Macquarie staff with the organisations concerned.

In its latest round of community grants, the Foundation has given support to Casa da Paz (House of Peace), which provides educational support to destitute and at-risk children in Sao Paulo, Brazil; the Karori Wildlife Sanctuary, an inner city reserve in Wellington, New Zealand, being restored to its original natural beauty; and the New Zealand Coastguard.

The Macquarie Bank Foundation board approved 22 community grants totalling almost $400,000, covering initiatives in education, health care and research, welfare, the environment and the arts.

In addition, it approved grants of more than $100,000 in support of Macquarie staff fundraising for not-for-profit organisations and executive service to community groups.

Foundation Chairman David Clarke said the grants reflected Macquarie’s commitment to give its time and expertise, in addition to its financial support, as it worked for betterment of the communities in which it operated.

“A major part of the Foundation’s activities is encouraging and supporting Macquarie staff in their community efforts, to build lasting relationships with not-for-profit organisations,” he said.

“These international organisations receive the volunteer support of Macquarie staff, in addition to the financial support of the Macquarie Bank Foundation.

“In our international philanthropy, we rely on Macquarie staff to identify projects in their communities that can benefit from the Foundation’s support.”

Other grants approved by the Foundation in the latest round include:

  • a three-year funding extension for the Macquarie Bank Future Problem Solving Program, an international competition which develops children’s analytical and teamwork skills.
  • a three-year grant to NISAD to assist with research into schizophrenia and, in particular, access to post-mortem brain tissue.
  • the Song Room program in Victoria, which introduces music and other arts to disadvantaged students, providing a creative outlet to schools with no music or drama programs.
  • funding for the publication of information booklets about Fragile X syndrome, the most common inherited form of intellectual disability.
  • support for the new Balya Cancer Retreat in Western Australia, which will offer year-round retreats for cancer sufferers and their families, cancer prevention seminars and group support days.

Macquarie Bank has provided support to community programs for more than 30 years, with the Macquarie Bank Foundation established in 1984 to formalise this assistance.

Currently, the Foundation contributes more than $3.5 million a year in grants to more than 200 community organisations.

It also encourages Macquarie staff in their community activities, enabling the Bank to give its time and expertise, as well as its financial support.
