In November 2007, an MPFI team comprising Macquarie (lead sponsor and finance), Pierse Group (design and build) and Sodexho (facilities management) was announced Preferred Tenderer for this prestigious project.
The project is the first PPP bundle of schools to be released under the Irish Schools Plan by the Department of Education and Science and the National Development Finance Agency (NDFA) and is a key component of Ireland's National Development Plan.
The scheme involves replacing six existing schools in Ferbane, Banagher and Portlaoise, with MPFI responsible for the design, build, finance and operation of the schools for 25 years.
The schools involved are:
- St Mary's CBS, Portlaoise (850 pupils)
- Scoil Chriost Ri, Portlaoise (850 pupils)
- St Rynagh's CC, Banagher (450 pupils, amalgamation of St Rynagh's Vocational School and La Sainte Union)
- Gallen CS, Ferbane (450 pupils, amalgamation of Ferbane Vocational School with St Joseph's and St Sarans Secondary School).
Planning for each school was submitted in April 2008, with the new schools opening from 2009.
