District energy

Our district energy business operates in two locations and includes the largest district cooling system in the US

MIC holds a 50.01 per cent equity interest in the company that owns Thermal Chicago and Northwind Aladdin.  

Our district energy business includes Thermal Chicago which operates the largest district cooling system in the United States.  Thermal Chicago provides chilled water under long-term contracts to over 100 customers in Chicago, Illinois. The business also provides district heating and cooling to a hotel/casino complex and adjacent shopping mall in Las Vegas, Nevada.

A typical district energy customer is the owner/manager of a large office or residential building or facilities such as hospitals, universities and municipal buildings.

We plan to grow Thermal Chicago by increasing the output capacity of our plants and selling the expanded capacity to new and existing customers.

On December 23, 2009, we sold 49.99 per cent of our membership interests in this business to John Hancock Life Insurance Company and John Hancock Life Insurance (USA).
